Grails is a very interesting band that has kept my interest ever since Burning Off Impurities dropped. Every album has been an interesting instrumental ride of various genres bent into their own particular sound. This new album and the previous Chalice Hymnal seem to have a bit in common as they are more experimental and a much more chill album than previous outings. not to say thats a bad thing, I am into it.
MAKE THINGS NEW AGAIN
Thew first half of this new album is SO GOOD, particularly when you get to Sisters of Bilitis. This is interestingly a reimagining of sorts of a previous song on the album Deep Politics called Daughters of Bilitis. Deep Politics happens to be my favorite album of theirs and Much like a movie score, I am a fan of retreading old melodies and making something new or different out of it. Although I could be totally wrong here, I feel like they played the older song Daughter of Bilis live so many times, and made so many changes that it ended up being an entirely new version. Thus, going on the record as something else? Possibly, I don't know that but it seems that they got to that point somehow or another.
LIVE IS DIFFERENT
I have had the great pleasure of seeing this band live in Atlanta at The drunken Unicorn and was SO SURPRISED as to how different the albums sounded. My initial thought of Chalice Hymnal was kind of MEH, but seeing it live actually made me see it in a whole different way. I am really hoping to catch the band again and see if this can be done again with ANCHES EN MATT.
Anyways, awesome album, worth putting in your collection. I got the Black Ice vinyl off their bandcamp and I certainly recommmend picking it up!
